Barbie - 2023

Quick Summary

In Barbie Land, you're a perfect being in a perfect world. Unless you're having an existential crisis, or you're Ken.

My Thoughts

Barbie is a film you're bound to have heard of. Quite simply, it's one of the most popular films of 2023. It has to be said that the marketing and rebranding have been very successful. But what about the film itself, and does it deserve such success?

First of all, you can see that there's a budget. The sets are beautiful and well executed, immersing us in the world of Barbie. The colors are vibrant, the choreography and music dynamic - in short, Barbieland is a great success.

There are plenty of ideas, too. First of all, the opening is quite nice, a nice reference to 2001. There's also the "beach" job, the weird Barbie, and other absurdities. The delirium is valid. And the screenplay, while admittedly not exceptional, is at least present, which wasn't easy for a film like this.

And then there's the boredom. From the moment Barbie arrives in the real world, it becomes a little uninteresting. It's one cliché after another, and then you get a little bored. Barbie meets the villains, who are ultimately useless and do nothing to change the plot. The return to Barbieland is interesting, if you haven't already left the film.

However, the actors are pretty good. We have a great time watching Robbie and Gosling act like self-confessed idiots.

To Watch or Not to Watch

Barbie is a watchable film, but it soon becomes boring. I don't think it deserves all the success it's had, though it's still worth a look.
