In 1945, in a huge, isolated Victorian house on the island of Jersey off the coast of Normandy, lives Grace, a devout young woman, and her two children, Anne and Nicholas. The days are long for this mother, who spends all her time educating her children in her religious principles. Afflicted by a strange malady, Anne and Nicholas must never be exposed to the light of day. So they live in seclusion in this dark mansion, with the curtains drawn.
One foggy day, three people knock on the door of the isolated manor house, looking for work. Grace, who needs help with the upkeep of the grounds and a new nanny for her children, hires them. Strange things begin to happen in the house...
The Others is a very good horror/thriller fantasy. The script is very well written, and from the outset poses many unknowns and mysteries that we can't wait to discover. As a result, you don't want to leave the film until the end to learn more about these mysterious characters and this strange house.
The cinematography is very well executed, creating an eerie atmosphere throughout the film. The lighting effects are very well managed, adding to the eerie atmosphere.
Nicole Kidman's portrayal of Grace is excellent, but we mustn't forget the child actors, who in my opinion are even better, and it's they who really get us into the mood of the film. Impressive for their young age.
Another highlight of the film, and the main one, is the final twist. A twist was obviously expected, but it wasn't easy to guess. It calls the whole film into question, a bit like Shutter Island - 2010.
The Others is a film that succeeds on every level, keeping viewers glued to their seats for 1 hour 40 minutes. To be seen at least once, and possibly a second time with the final twist in mind.
