Point Break - 2015

Quick Summary

A series of spectacular robberies around the world is threatening the equilibrium of the financial markets. The criminals are operating on motorcycles in New York skyscrapers, or in wingsuits to escape from planes over the jungle. Johnny Utah, a former motocross legend turned FBI agent, must infiltrate the group of extreme sportsmen suspected of being behind these astonishing robberies. To gain their trust, Utah faces insane challenges, from surfing and snowboarding to skydiving and bare-handed climbing. Just when he thinks he's identified the mastermind behind the heists, he finds himself unwillingly drawn into the criminal activities of the adrenaline-fueled group..

My Thoughts

This film is a remake of Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 film of the same name. And it doesn't really do it justice.

It's a simple action movie, with nothing but action. This kind of movie doesn't work in 2023, and it certainly didn't work in 2015 when it came out.

We're sold images and stunts, quite spectacular and rather well done. There are also a few gunfights, not quite as well done, but watchable. And that's all the good stuff.

For the not-so-good, let's start with the characters. The acting isn't exceptional, the charisma leaves something to be desired, the lines aren't great... The 1991 characters have nothing to envy of their modern-day counterparts.

Secondly, the absence of a script is a little disturbing. Gone is the elaborate script of 1991; here, the focus is solely on action, omitting all the details necessary to make the story realistic.

And then, finally, there are a few lengthy passages, some of which we could have done without.

To Watch or Not to Watch

This film isn't a horror either, but it does have its faults. Don't go and see it, go and see (or see again) Kathryn Bigelow's version.
